There is a good article on Nathan’s blog about church marketing. It is specifically written for small churches which makes it relevant to my situation.
It contains 10 points including the obligitory post on creating a church website and important points relating to youth.
The kids are the single most important part of your [church’s] ministry. Spend a lot of time, money and effort on having a good children’s program … You have a responsibility to those kids to give them a good foundation.
Very hard to disagree with, now go and read the whole article.

I pastor a small church, mostly old folks. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that unless something changes soon with the young people we DO have, the church is on a slow path to death of old age.

Brandon,
I totally agree. I’ve talked to several pastors off the record and many of them are afraid of changing too much since it is the old folks that are faithful givers. I personally think that’s somewhat cowardly, but at the same time, I can understand their fear.
But your point is still completely valid. 10 years from now, if you don’t start speaking to and recognizing the younger crowd, the old folks will be dead and the young folks will find another church or leave the church altogether. Sad predicament.

At the same time, as is being discussed on a post in my blog, we have to view the older folks as allies and integral parts of church life.
To figure out how to view them as assets instead of hindrances, while at the same time, figuring out how to grow younger…ahh, that is the true challenge!

I’ve read that post Brandon and it is very good. You are precisely on target. Elderly folks are important to a successful church and at the same time, the church should be important to them. Neither group can be ignored, but as you said, that is definitely a challenge.
