I have finally got round to embedding a google map of the location of the church on our church website. This is a much better solution than just scanning a map from a roadatlas and uploading it (which breaks copyright law) or linking visitors to external sites, which may mean you lose those visitors.
I used the wordpress plugin called GeoPress. It is simple to set up once you have signed into Google and obtained an API key (Google Maps API registration). (Note: enter your blog url as the GoogleMaps URL).
Then you can add maps to any posts or pages, but most importantly for church website, to the map and directions page.

Good job… and a useful tool.
I’d like to suggest you either raise the interactive map to the top of the page or create a thumbnail graphic and link to the page with the map on it.
By having it at the bottom you run the risk of increasing your page load without your audience ever knowing it’s worth waiting.

It’s so refreshing to see clear and simple advice. So many churches forget to put directions let alone an interactive map (googlemaps are cool!). I’ve found a site with a bunch of tips that other newbie webmasters might also find helpful http://www.church123.com (see church website advice). Thanks for the great site.

There has been a lot of sites use the Google Maps api feature and you can hardely blame them….it’s slick. I thought about adding it to my Is God Religious? but i’m not sure how many of the “churches” registered have actual physical addresses.
